A Lily Garden

lily-garden-2015-june-29%2C-2015-640-jpg.jpg
The Lily Garden
in Springfield, Missouri's Springfield Botanical Gardens came into being in 2005. Originally designed by Dr. Bill Roston and installed by the Ozarks Regional Lily Society, today it displays some 200 Asiatic, Oriental, and Trumpet lilies in at least 50 varieties.
      Lilies come in three types:

Asiatic Lilies grow 2-3 feet tall and bloom over a long season. They are mostly unscented and require winter chilling to thrive.
Oriental Lilies have large, ornate flowers and very intense fragrance. They range from 18 inches to 6 feet in height. Planting combinations of Asiatic and Oriental lilies is a good way to extend the lily color season.
      Trumpet Lilies
bloom in midsummer and are distinguished by their elegant habit and trumpet-shaped flowers. The tallest of the Trumpet Lilies are called Aurelian Hybrid Lilies and can reach more than 5 feet tall.

Lilies grow beautifully in the Ozarks, needing only soil with good drainage, a sunny or partially shady exposure, a little moisture, and some nutrients to excel. For home gardeners they bring new life and color to the summer garden and, with their slim stems and foliage, do so without interfering with surrounding plants.

Shown here are all three types of lilies. All can be seen in peak bloom from the second week in June through the end of the month. Arranged in several small beds and grouped by height, they comprise one of the botanical gardens' most colorful displays.

We hope you can see and enjoy the Lily Garden in person in the Springfield Botanical Gardens at 2400 S. Scenic Avenue in Springfield.

Making the Garden
the-lily-garden-jpg.jpg

Designed in numerous small beds with lovely curvilinear paths and arranged by color and height, the Lily Garden today thrives thanks to the care of members of the Ozarks Regional Lily Society. Individual varieties are clearly labeled to help gardeners identify them and obtain them commercially for their own gardens.

Caring for the Garden
all-abloom-jpg.jpg

The Lily Garden is maintained and improved by Society members as volunteers. In addition, all of the plants are donated.

A Key Figure
frank-mason-in-the-lily-garden-jpg.jpg

One of the Lily Garden's major benefactors was Frank Mason, shown here "getting the border right." Frank gave an enormous amount of his time, labor, and from-the-ground-up garden smarts to many of the Springfield Botanical Gardens, and was invaluable especially to this garden. Sadly, he passed away in 2016. He is missed.

Joining the Society is easy and inexpensive. Simply call 417-883-5893 to sign up. Individual dues are only $2 annually. In addition to regular meetings, Society members hold a public sale of select lily bulbs in March, and in June they host a colorful Lily Show in the Botanical Center at 2400 S. Scenic in Springfield, Missouri.

'Aladdin's Dazzle'

aladdins-dazzle-la-hybrid-jpg.jpg

'Aladdin's Dazzle' is a relatively new type of lily known as an LA hybrid, the "LA" standing for the cross between Longiflorum and Asiatic lilies. First introduced in 1992, LA hybrids combine the trumpet shape and longer vase life of Longiflorum lilies with the warmer colors and upward-facing flowers of the Asiatics. 'Aladdin's Dazzle' is an expecially cheery presence in the garden, providing a great abundance of brilliant yellow color in a plant that can reach 5 feet tall.

'Bali Hai'

bali-hai-asiatic-jpg.jpg

'Bali Hai' is an unusually lovely multicolor Asiatic lily with hues of rose and peach that blooms in late spring or early summer. The plant can reach 4 feet tall and likes full sun to partial shade. Note: The blossoms make superb cut flowers.

'Belladonna'

belladonna-asiatic-1-jpg.jpg

'Belladonna' is an "Orienpet" hybrid lily. Orienpet lilies combine the beauty of Oriental lilies with the vigor, heat tolerance and color of Trumpet and Aurelian hybrid lilies. 'Belladonna' bears rich golden-yellow flowers in July to August. It grows to 4 feet tal and the flowers are said to have a lovely, soft fragrance.

'Black Beauty'
black-beauty-jpg.jpg

'Black Beauty' is an Orienpet lily that can be an extra-striking presence in the garden. It's main color is often described as "dark raspberry." It can reach 7 feet tall and 2 feet wide, is wonderfully fragrant, and naturalizes well.

'Black-Eyed Cindy'

black-eyed-cindy-asiatic-1-jpg.jpg

'Black Eyed Cindy' is definitely a dramatic note in the garden with its bright yellow petals with bold brown "spots" resembling tiny volcanic eruptions. An Asiatic Lily, it grows to 4 feet tall, is fragrant, attracts bees and butterflies, and makes an excellent cut flower.

'Blackout'

blackout-asiatic.jpg

'Blackout' is a most striking Asiatic lily whose glossy flowers of darkest red and black-burgundy centers are bold notes in any garden. This unique lily can grow 40 inches tall and blooms beautifully in June and July. As might be expected, mixing it with lighter-color flowers makes it even more dramatic.
