The word "Xeriscape" (from the Greek xeri, meaning "dry," and scape, meaning "garden") was coined during a 1987 Denver drought. It first meant a dry, drought-tolerant garden but now means a garden that groups plants by water needs. This garden has three areass of water use: high, moderate, and low, the latter featuring this Prickly Pear (Opuntia vulgaris), which bears striking flowers in early June.
